I am an astrologer of nearly 40 years experience, seeking an eclectic integration of astrology, spiritual psychology and ancient wisdom teachings. After an initiatory reading in 1971 by an astrologer in Ashland, Oregon known only as Sunny Blue Boy, I began my own study of astrology in earnest. About this time, I also began a serious study of kundalini yoga with Yogi Bhajan, moving to southern California where I became senior editor at the Kundalini Yoga Institute. While there, I functioned as the resident astrologer, taught kundalini yoga and meditation in the surrounding colleges, and obtained a masters degree in Marriage, Family and Child Counseling. It was here that I began the integration of ideas drawn from psychology, yogic philosophy and astrology that led to the writing of my book Seven Gates.
Upon leaving the ashram in 1977, I moved to Florida, where I continued to study, write and teach. In 1978, I was introduced to the teachings of Swami Muktananda, and began to supplement my knowledge of yogic philosophy with the theory and practice of Siddha yoga. Over the next 15 years, I developed an international mail order astrology practice with clients from Canada, England, Germany, Japan, and Thailand, as well as the US. Combining a Rudhyarian approach to astrology with a strong foundation in spiritual psychology, I focused my readings primarily upon the underlying spiritual opportunities at the heart of my client’s issues and concerns.
Throughout the 1980s and 90s, I was an active participant in the Long Dance, an annual ceremonial gathering in the high desert of New Mexico. At the dance, I taught many workshops in movement, experiential astrology, and group process. Through my own interest and involvement in Native American spiritual practices, including the sweat lodge and a number of vision quests, I gradually began to incorporate these sensibilities into my work.
In 1993, I had an epiphany in which I realized that I could better serve my clients by teaching them astrology, rather than simply decoding the symbolism for them. I started an intimately personal correspondence course called The Eye of the Centaur, and for the next 8 years, worked intensively with a small number of dedicated students, willing to let the crucible of their own lives be their classroom. Throughout the 90s, I wrote numerous articles for The Mountain Astrologer, The International Astrologer and other publications, sharing insights I had evolved in the teaching of my course (some of these articles can be seen here).
In 2001, I took a sabbatical from my course to research and write The Seven Gates of Soul: Reclaiming the Poetry of Everyday Life (published in 2004)– a 6000 year history of ideas about the soul, drawn from religion, philosophy, science, psychology and an intuitive form of astrology called astropoetics. In 2007, I published a second book – Tracking the Soul With An Astrology of Consciousness – the first in a series that will delineate an astropoetic approach to the practice of astrology in some detail.
Tracking the Soul develops the idea, first put forth by Dane Rudhyar that the birthchart is a symbolic abstraction until a living soul infuses it with consciousness. The book presents a complete system of spiritual psychology based on an integration of astrology and the chakra system.
I am currently at work on a third book: Astrology and the Archetypal Power of Number: A Contemporary Reformulation of Pythagorean Number Theory, which is expected to be available in 2010.
In 2005, I resumed teaching my correspondence course, now transformed into The Astropoetic School of Soul Discovery. The Astropoetic School offers a four-year correspondence course, as well as a series of workshops. The Tracking the Soul Mobile Workshop is a 6-day adaptation of the book, designed to lead participants into an intimate awareness of the consciousness they bring to their core issues, and the possibility for further transmutation and healing of these issues that is encoded in their birthcharts.
In 2009, I began a personal blog – The Sky is My Mirror – to demonstrate how I use the astropoetic techniques and principles outlined in my books in my own life.
